Greetings in the name of Jesus, Prince of Peace
Christians in Sudan have requested our prayers for Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, a believer from a Muslim background, who is married to a Christian man of South Sudanese origin. The husband also holds US citizenship. The couple have a young son and are expecting their second child later this month.
Meriam was arrested on 17th February and on 4th March she was charged with adultery and apostasy. The government does not recognise the couple’s marriage, hence the adultery charge. The son is with his mother in prison because the authorities regard him as a ‘Muslim’ and will not allow him to be raised by his father who is a Christian.
Meriam appeared in court yesterday (i.e. 11th May) where she was convicted of apostasy and sentenced to death. There is no known precedent for such a verdict and sentence being issued by a Sudanese court against a follower of Jesus in recent times.
Christians supporting this family request our prayers that:
a. Meriam, her husband, their son and their unborn child will know the peace, presence and protection of Jesus
b. All charges will be dropped, the death sentence will be rescinded, Meriam will be released and the family will be reunited
c. Christians across Sudan will know the peace and presence of Jesus, the Spirit’s daily guidance and be equipped to live without fear
d. All officials involved will love mercy, act justly, learn about Jesus and choose to follow Him.
